webDR: Spatial exploration of invasion risk of dreissenid mussels in the Missouri River Basin at the HUC10 watershed scale

September 29, 2025

The spread of non-native dreissenid mussels across North America has resulted in significant ecological and economic damage. Management efforts implementing early detection efforts (including watercraft inspections) may help reduce potential spread and new introductions, but optimizing effective deployment of these efforts in a resource-constrained environment is challenging. Raymond et al. (2025a, b) developed a composite relative risk index (CRR) for watersheds in the Missouri River Basin that integrates dreissenid mussel habitat suitability, watershed connectivity, watercraft inspection capability, and waterbody economic uses within the Missouri River Basin to account for direct and indirect damages associated with dreissenid mussel infestation combined with the risk of a infestation occurring.
This package uses the Shiny application framework to display the CRR index of dreissenid mussel introduction within the Missouri River Basin. This application is targetd toward natural resource managers within the Missouri River Basin that are faced with impending or incipient dreissend mussel infestations within their jurisdiction and are charged with managing limited management resources. The user can adjust relative weights on various individual CRR components to reflect their relative importance in their specific natural resource management context, and explore the impacts of various weighting schemes on the potential impact at the HUC10 watershed scale.
