Areas of Concern: Coordinated Support and Evaluation of the Maumee AOC
USGS scientists help support habitat assessment and restoration in the Maumee area of concern (AOC) to determine the extent to which beneficial uses are impaired and the types of management actions required to remediate and delist the AOC.
USGS provided technical support and assistance to agencies and citizens seeking to remove beneficial use impairments (BUIs) within the Maumee Area of Concern (AOC) , with the ultimate goal of removing the impairments to aid in delisting the AOC. A Mapping Application for the Lower Maumee River (MALMR) tool was developed to help make decisions about habitat restoration at various scales in the watershed. By delineating current habitat conditions in the lower Maumee River and providing interactive access to spatial aquatic information, the MALMR: 1) informs ongoing restoration discussions within the Maumee Area of Concern (AOC) program, 2) offers a common platform to support discussion across a network of stakeholders, 3) provides a template for other areas of restoration activity across the Great Lakes ecosystem, and 4) provides data to address scientific questions in academic settings.
The mapping application suggests that habitat restorations will be extremely limited, except for a portion of the lower river immediately upstream from the shipping channel. Fish data indicate a near-absence of wetland species, and dominance by tolerant omnivores; this suggests that priority actions involve wetland and riparian restoration.
