Aleeza Wilkins

Aleeza Wilkins is a Natural Hazard Impacts Specialist with the Office of Risk and Resilience in the USGS Natural Hazards Mission Area. Aleeza uses her background in volcanology and experience with interagency coordination to lead disaster loss reporting activities for the United States, particularly related to the impacts of geophysical hazards.

Since joining the Office of Risk and Resilience in 2024, Aleeza is developing a strategic plan for standardized disaster loss reporting for geophysical hazards in the United States by working closely with USGS data and experts across the Federal interagency, academia, non-governmental organizations, and with international partners. As Disaster Loss Data Coordinator, she is responsible for assembling and reporting relevant USGS data in support of the Nation's progress towards implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. She is working to collect, aggregate and report on disaster losses related to geophysical hazards annually based on the best available information, while also seeking out new or better data sources by building partnerships with experts in the field.

Previously, Aleeza served as a Staff Scientist for the USGS Natural Hazards Mission Area. This role included serving as Secretariat to the Science for Disaster Reduction (SDR) Interagency Working Group under the National Science and Technology Council's Subcommittee for Resilience Science and Technology.  As the SDR is the U.S. National Platform for the United Nations Office of Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), in this role, Aleeza also collected U.S. disaster loss and preparedness data and reports progress toward implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030). In addition, she coordinated Natural Hazards-funded portions of the Mendenhall Postdoctoral Research Program and provided outreach and strategic planning for the Volcano Hazards Program.
