Alex Mass

Alex Mass is a Chemist for the USGS Water Resources Mission Area.

Alex received her PhD in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Colorado, investigating the long-range transport, deposition, and phase-partitioning of semi-volatile organic contaminants onto glaciers, sediment, and runoff in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, and the contribution of cryoconite meltwater to the overall Dry Valleys hydrologic regime. Her research interests focus on the transport, fate, and analytical detection of organic contaminants (primarily PFAS and halogenated pesticides) impacting air/water quality due to long-range anthropogenic emissions as well as wildfires & disturbance events. Additional foci include method development projects to improve compound identification at the laboratory/ analytical level and in field sampling techniques, and interpretation of large-scale datasets to identify long term trends in the distribution and persistence of organic pollutants.
