Arthur ‘Art’ Lilienthal is a Hydrologist and Surface Water Specialist with the U.S. Geological Survey New York Water Science Center.

Art is the Surface-Water Specialist with the U.S. Geological Survey New York Water Science Center, providing training and technical support for center personnel involved in surface water data collection and publication.  Art graduated from the State University of New York College at Geneseo in 2006 with a B.S. in Biology and Secondary Education and in 2008 from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry with a M.S. in Hydrology. From 2008 to 2014, Art served as a Hydrologic Technician with the Pennsylvania Water Science Center (2008-2010), a Hydrologist with the North Dakota Water Science Center (2010-2013), and a Hydrologist with the Office of the Delaware River Master (2013-2014).    From March 2014 through December 2024, Art served as a Hydrologist and Subject Matter Expert (SME) at the U.S. Geological Survey New York Water Science Center, initially at the Ithaca field office (2014–2021) and later at the Cortland field office (2021–Present).  Art began the position of Surface Water Specialist for the New York Water Science Center in December 2024.

Art has operated and maintained complex stream gages and has analyzed, reviewed, and audited hydrologic records of varying complexity across New York State.  In addition, Art has conducted audits of discrete and approved time-series data to ensure compliance with the New York Water Science Center Quality Assurance Plan and USGS Water Mission Area policy.  Art is an expert and instructor on vertical datum, index velocity, and rating analysis.
