Charlie Miles
Charlie joined the Landslide Hazards Program as a geologist in 2022.
Charlie primarily supports research of landslides in the Prince William Sound, Alaska. He specializes in ground-based radar interferometry for measuring surface displacements. He additionally works with UAV photogrammetry, satellite InSAR, and other remote sensing techniques.

UAV Imagery and Topographic Data from Black Hollow 10 September 2025, upper Cache la Poudre River UAV Imagery and Topographic Data from Black Hollow 10 September 2025, upper Cache la Poudre River
This dataset contains a point cloud, digital elevation model (DEM), orthoimagery, and uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery covering 0.1 km2 of the Black Hollow drainage located along the upper Cache la Poudre River, in Larimer County, Colorado, USA. These products show erosional and depositional features, most notably wood jams (accumulation of large woody debris in a channel)...
Laboratory test results from specimens of regolith obtained from landslide-prone terrain in Puerto Rico Laboratory test results from specimens of regolith obtained from landslide-prone terrain in Puerto Rico
This data release provides results from laboratory testing of 49 regolith specimens obtained from landslide-prone terrain in Puerto Rico, USA. Specimens were obtained by hand either from the ground surface or from the subsurface using boreholes and hand-excavated pits to a maximum depth of 110 cm. Specimen depths are reliably indicated in the file “Tests-performed.csv” and less reliably...
Results from dynamic cone penetration testing of soils at hydrologic monitoring sites across Puerto Rico Results from dynamic cone penetration testing of soils at hydrologic monitoring sites across Puerto Rico
A Smart Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) system allows for the partially automated collection of cone penetrometer data (CPT) to determine mechanical properties of soil along a vertical profile. A smart DCP system was used to collect soil penetration-with-depth values at 19 sites across the mountainous regions of Puerto Rico. The 19 sites were co-located at the United States Geological...
Preliminary Landslide Inventory for Landslides Triggered by Hurricane Helene (September 2024) Preliminary Landslide Inventory for Landslides Triggered by Hurricane Helene (September 2024)
We present a preliminary point inventory of landslides triggered by Hurricane Helene, which impacted southern Appalachia between September 25 and 27, 2024. This inventory is a result of a rapid response mapping effort led by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Landslide Assessments, Situational Awareness, and Event Response Research (LASER) project. LASER collaborated with state surveys and...
Rock mass quality and structural geology observations in Prince William Sound, Alaska (2023) Rock mass quality and structural geology observations in Prince William Sound, Alaska (2023)
Multiple subaerial landslides adjacent to Prince William Sound, Alaska (for example, Dai and others, 2020; Higman and others, 2023; Schaefer and others, 2024) pose a threat to the public because of their potential to generate ocean waves (Barnhart and others, 2021, 2022; Dai and others, 2020) that could affect towns and marine activities. One bedrock landslide on the west side of Barry...
Imagery and digital surface model for the Slumgullion landslide, Lake City, Colorado, June 3, 2024 Imagery and digital surface model for the Slumgullion landslide, Lake City, Colorado, June 3, 2024
This dataset contains a point cloud (Slumgullion_PointCloud.laz), 1-meter digital surface model (Slumgullion_DSM.tif), and orthoimagery (0.1-meter resolution) (Slumgullion_Ortho.tif) of the active portion of the Slumgullion landslide in Lake City, Colorado. The Slumgullion landslide is a translational slide with a continuously moving, active portion and an inactive portion. 896 photos...
Results from dynamic cone penetration testing of soils on the Utuado Batholith, upland and dissected terrains, Puerto Rico – March 2022 Results from dynamic cone penetration testing of soils on the Utuado Batholith, upland and dissected terrains, Puerto Rico – March 2022
A Smart Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) system allows for the partially automated collection of cone penetrometer data (CPT) to determine mechanical properties of soil along a vertical profile. A smart DCP system was used to collect soil penetration-with-depth values at 16 sites along three transects on the Utuado Batholith, a late Cretaceous age granodiorite pluton located on the...
