J. Stephen Schindler
Stephen Schindler is an Emeritus Research Geologist in the Florence Bascom Geoscience Center specializing in regional geology.
Stephen has studied earth processes and conducted geologic mapping in a variety of areas: the Coastal Plain in the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plain provinces, Proterozoic terranes of the Blue Ridge in Virginia and Georgia; Paleozoic terrane of the Valley and Ridge Province in the mid-Atlantic States. Stephen has also studied: neotectonics and related geomorphology in Virginia and Georgia; lithostratigraphic relations to earthquake hazards in Cyprus; structural relations to rock mechanics and seismic propagation in Kazakhstan and in China Lake, California.

Detailed Sections from Auger Holes in the Emporia 1:100,000-Scale Quadrangle, North Carolina and Virginia Detailed Sections from Auger Holes in the Emporia 1:100,000-Scale Quadrangle, North Carolina and Virginia
The Emporia 1:100,000-scale quadrangle straddles the Tidewater Fall Line in southern Virginia and includes a small part of northernmost North Carolina. Sediments of the coastal plain underlie the eastern three-fifths of this area. These sediments onlap crystalline basement rocks toward the west and dip gently to the east, reaching a maximum known thickness of 821 feet in the extreme...
