Martin LaFevers

I am a geophysicist based at the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Washington. As lead of the international engineering team for the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP), I work in volcanic regions of the United States and around the world.

My career in geophysics began with tectonic, seismic and tsunami monitoring in Alaska. During that time, I worked in many remote locations in the wilderness and rural communities. Through the Alaskan experience, I gained appreciation for the connection between local culture and hazard monitoring. My current work continues to foster community connections by engaging with international organizations responsible for the technical side of monitoring and being onsite at volcanoes working with local communities. This multi-agency collaborative technical work builds relationships and trust between locals and hazard monitoring experts, which is vital during times of volcanic unrest.
