Robert Michael de Groot

Robert de Groot is a physical scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Science Center in Pasadena, CA.

Biography

He serves as the Coordinator for Communication, Education, Outreach, and Technical Engagement for the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System. He leads the effort to develop and execute training and education programs and materials to promote the public and institutional acceptance and ongoing implementation of the ShakeAlert for over 50 million residents and visitors in California, Oregon, and Washington. He also coordinates long-term interaction with ShakeAlert technical partners including managing cooperative and tech transfer agreements.

From 1999 – 2016 he was at the University of Southern California as the Director of Education, Experiential Learning, and Career Advancement at the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). His duties included managing SCEC’s undergraduate research program, leading K – 12 formal education initiatives, educator professional development programs, and informal (free-choice) learning efforts. Robert holds a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Southern California. His doctoral dissertation explored the use of analogies in earthquake science communication. Robert is the ShakeAlert communications point of contact after earthquakes and other events involving ShakeAlert.
