Water Availability and Use Science Program

Water Use Grants

The SECURE Water Act authorized a program that supports activities related to data collection and methods research and development at the State level. The USGS Water-Use Data and Research program (WUDR) provides financial assistance through cooperative agreements with State water resource agencies to improve the availability, quality, compatibility, and delivery of water-use data that is collected or estimated by States. The Act requires that these State datasets be integrated with appropriate datasets that are developed or maintained by the USGS.

Below, please find several highlights of recent accomplishments and planned activities.

  • In 2017, Water Use Data and Research program awards were made to agencies in 15 States, for a total of $1.32M in funding.

  • In 2018, Water Use Data and Research program awards were made to 7 States, for a total of about $590,000 in funding.  Non-competitive awards were made to Guam and South Carolina to assist in compiling information on current water-use data availability and quality for a total FY18 funding of about $642,000.

  • In 2019, the Water Use Data and Research program has funding available for awards under the competitive grant process.
