Shot prevalences and diets of diving ducks five years after ban on use of lead shotshells at Catahoula Lake, Louisiana Shot prevalences and diets of diving ducks five years after ban on use of lead shotshells at Catahoula Lake, Louisiana
Catahoula Lake, central Louisiana, is a RAMSAR Convention Wetland of International Importance and among the most important wintering and staging areas for waterfowl in North America. To evaluate exposure rates in Catahoula Lake waterfowl 5 years after a ban on use of lead shot, we determined the prevalence of ingested shot and diets of canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria) and lesser scaup (A...

Natural establishment of woody species on abandoned agricultural fields in the lower Mississippi Valley: first- and second-year results Natural establishment of woody species on abandoned agricultural fields in the lower Mississippi Valley: first- and second-year results
The natural establishment of woody seedlings on abandoned agricultural fields was investigated at sites in Louisiana and Mississippi. Series of disked and undisked plots originating at forest edges and oriented in cardinal directions were established on fields at each site. During the firest 2 years, seedling recruitment was dominated by sweetgum, sugarberry, and elms at both sites...

Effects of flooding regime, mycorrhizal inoculation and seedling treatment type on first-year survival of Nuttal Oak (Quercus nuttallii Palmer) Effects of flooding regime, mycorrhizal inoculation and seedling treatment type on first-year survival of Nuttal Oak (Quercus nuttallii Palmer)
Three different types of Nuttall oak (Quercus nuttallii Palmer) seedlings were planted on floodprone, former cropland in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The three types of 1+0 seedlings planted at each site in January and February of 1995 were bareroot seedlings, seedlings grown in 164 square centimeters plastic containers, and container grown seedlings inoculated with vegetative...

Characterization of an old-growth bottomland hardwood wetland forest in Northeast Texas: Harrison Bayou Characterization of an old-growth bottomland hardwood wetland forest in Northeast Texas: Harrison Bayou
Most wetland losses in the southern region over the past 200 years have occurred in bottomland hardwood forests. By 1980 the original extent of palustrine bottomland in Texas had been reduced by 63%, from roughly 16 to 6 million acres. Additional losses have occurred during more recent years as a result of conversion to agriculture and timber harvests; these factors and the need to...

Classifying coastal resources by integrating optical and radar imagery and color infrared photography Classifying coastal resources by integrating optical and radar imagery and color infrared photography
A progressive classification of a marsh and forest system using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), color infrared (CIR) photograph, and ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data improved classification accuracy when compared to classification using solely TM reflective band data. The classification resulted in a detailed identification of differences within a nearly monotypic black needlerush...

Common and scientific names of aquatic invertebrates from the United States and Canada: Mollusks Common and scientific names of aquatic invertebrates from the United States and Canada: Mollusks
This edition of Common and Scientific Names of Invertebrates from the United States and Canada: Mollusks represents the efforts of 15 molluscan taxonomic specialists in compiling a comprehensive checklist of the mollusks found in North America and Canada and their vernacular names. Built upon the success of the first edition, the authors have updated the nomenclature to reflect recent...

Variations in zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) veliger densities throughout 1996 at Dam 52 on the lower Ohio River Variations in zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) veliger densities throughout 1996 at Dam 52 on the lower Ohio River
Zebra mussel veliger densities were monitored throughout 1996 at Lock and Dam 52 on the lower Ohio River near Brookport, IL. The spawning season occurred between mid June and early September with veliger densities peaking at 30,000/m3 in late June. Veliger first appeared at a water temperature of 21° C. When spawning ended in September the water temperature was 22 °C. Veligers were found

Modeling spatial distribution of the Unionid mussels and the core-satellite hypothesis Modeling spatial distribution of the Unionid mussels and the core-satellite hypothesis
This paper discusses the spatial distribution patterns of the various species of the Unionid mussels as functions of their respective life-cycle characteristics. Computer simulations identify two life-cycle characteristics as major factors governing the abundance of a species, namely the movement range of their fish hosts and the success rate of the parasitic larval glochidia in finding...

Of reef fishes, overfishing and in situ observations of fish traps in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands Of reef fishes, overfishing and in situ observations of fish traps in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
Fishing with a variety of methods and gears, including traps, is allowed within the waters of Virgin Islands National Park (St. 10hn, U.S. Virgin Islands). Randall's 1 9 6 1 observation of the effects of overushing in nearshore waters off Sto John has been followed by three and a half decades of reports documenting the declining reef fish catch in the Virgin Islands and much of the...
