Drug Testing Code Designations Security Clearance Guidance

If a position meets one of the following criteria than the position is subject to Drug Testing.

  • Any position encumbered by a Presidential Appointee.
  • The position is a Motor Vehicle Operator (classified in the Job Series WG 5703). This does not include positions, like the many USGS scientific and technical positions, that require an employee operate a motor vehicle as an incidental driver. (See the reference to the Drill Rig personnel in #9.)
  • Aircraft Operators certified by the DOI Office or Aircraft Services to operate DOI aircraft.
  • Boat Operators and Large Vessel Crewmembers. This designation includes positions such as Ship Masters, Chief Engineers, Large Vessel Crewmembers, and Engineers who have direct responsibility for the safety of the crew and passengers. This designation does not include the many USGS scientists and technicians who operate small craft as an incidental operator for data collection purposes.
  • Security Guards. Positions actually classified as Security Guards, GS-085, who are required to carry bureau issued firearms.
  • Divers. Positions that conduct dives for scientific investigations and/or examinations of bureau facilities/equipment.
  • Explosives Operators (those who handle explosives in the conduct or support of scientific investigations).
  • Positions that require a Commercial Driver’s License. This applies to employees, who as part of their officially assigned duties, are required to operate a vehicle that:
    • has a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds inclusive of a towed unit with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds, or
    • has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds; or
    • is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver
  • In the USGS, positions that would typically meet the criteria are those that require the employee to drive a Drill Rig. If the Drill Rig meets or exceeds the weight ratings above the position would be subject to drug testing.
