Mechanical Engineer, GS-0830

Definitions:

EXPERIENCE: One year of work experience is twelve months working full-time (at least 35-40 hours per week). Part-time experience can be pro-rated (i.e., a year at 20 hours per week is credited as 6 months of experience). If your position consisted of mixed duties, experience credit is given for the percentage of time that you spent on qualifying duties (i.e., if you held a position for 2 years, full-time, consisting of 25% personnel work and 75% budget work, and then applied for a budget position you could calculate your experience as follows: 2 yrs = 24 months. 24 months x 75% [percentage of time spent on budget duties] = 18 months of qualifying experience.)

UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION: A year of undergraduate education is 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent of college study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent was a prerequisite.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: In the absence of specific graduate program information, a year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours of graduate level college course work, or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full time study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet the requirements outlined below to satisfy the basic requirements for Civil Engineer/Hydraulic Engineer, all grade levels.

A. Applicants must have a professional engineering degree which included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than 1st year physics/chemistry) in 5 of the following 7 areas of engineering science or physics: statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, thermodynamics, electrical fields/circuits, nature and properties of materials, or comparable area of fundamental engineering science/physics such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics or electronics.

OR B. A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in engineering, demonstrated by a current registration as a professional engineer by any state, District or Columbia, Guam or Puerto Rico.

OR C. A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in engineering, demonstrated by passing the Engineer-in-training (EIT) exam or required written test for professional registration administered by Boards of Engineering Examiners in any state, District of Columbia, Guam or Puerto Rico.

OR D. A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in engineering, demonstrated by completion of 60 semester hours of courses in physical, math, and engineering science and including engineering courses specified in A above. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE GRADUATE EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE)

OR E. A bachelor's degree in engineering technology or an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, math, hydrology or geology, and 1-year of professional engineering experience under professional engineering supervision.

 

For GS-9:

In addition to the basic requirements as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

A. At least one full-time year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7. Examples may include adjusting and correlating data, collecting/interpreting hydraulic data for bridge/culvert design, making stream flow measurements under conditions of above average difficulty; hydraulic analysis of floodway channel capacity; conducting field surveys; writing computer programs for hydraulic analysis; recognizing discrepancies in data.

OR B. 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in engineering or a related field which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.

OR C. A combination of graduate level education beyond the first year of progressive graduate study and appropriate specialized experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE GRADUATE EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE)

OR D. A combination of superior academic achievement in a professional engineering curriculum and 1 year appropriate professional experience which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities for the position. OR E. Completed requirements of a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering and have 1 year of appropriate professional experience which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities for the positions.

 

For GS-11:

In addition to the basic requirements as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

A. At least one full-time year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9. Examples may include conducting preliminary site investigations to obtain field data, preparing design criteria for smaller or less complex facilities or developing technical data for formal specifications regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, quantities, and costs; designing and constructing hydrologic measuring structures.

OR B. 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in professional engineering or a related field which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.

OR C. A combination of graduate level education, as described above, beyond the second year of progressive graduate study and appropriate specialized experience, as described above, that together meet the qualification requirements for this position. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE GRADUATE EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE)

 

For GS-12:

In addition to meeting the basic requirements as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

At least 1-year of specialized experience equal to GS-11 level. Examples may include: designing and layout of plans for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and waste water systems for research buildings and similar facilities; constructing new structures or additions or renovating existing structures; providing formal specifications regarding dimensions, quantities, and costs; reviewing design architect's working drawings; and analyzing mechanical needs.
