At the end of fiscal year (FY) 2021, the CDI had 2,277 members, an increase of 35% in one year. Four new collaboration areas were also established in FY 2021.

The Community for Data Integration is a community of practice whose purpose is to advance the U.S. Geological Survey’s data integration capabilities. In fiscal year 2021, the Community for Data Integration held 12 monthly forums, facilitated 13 collaboration areas, and supported 13 projects. The activities supported the broad U.S. Geological Survey priority of producing building blocks for doing integrated predictive science.  Specifically, the activities supported tools and methods for FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data and fire science and coastal resilience and protection. Through these efforts, community members were informed of new and emerging technologies and data topics that helped them accomplish their professional responsibilities. 

At the end of fiscal year (FY) 2021, the CDI had 2,277 members, an increase of 35% in one year. Members included both USGS employees and USGS contractors, as well as members from academia, non-profits, commercial companies, and other state, federal, and international organizations. The roles that members serve in their organizations include data managers, research scientists, software developers, managers, data scientists, and other practitioners. A reason for the large increase in membership in FY 2021 was the addition of members from existing communities that came under the CDI umbrella.

 

New CDI Collaboration Areas in FY21

Geomorphology

The Geomorphology focus group shares information related to geomorphology data, projects, and tools to promote communication among geomorphologists. Geomorphology is the study of the formation and evolution of landforms on Earth’s surface. The focus group convenes monthly virtual webinars to learn from USGS and external speakers.  

Hyperspectral Data 

The Hyperspectral community of practice works to collectively advance USGS expertise in imaging spectroscopy and cutting-edge research and applications. Hyperspectral imagery measures reflection across the electromagnetic spectrum, not only visible light. Hyperspectral imagery has scientific applications in geology, mineral resources, mapping distributions of native and invasive plant species, identifying environmental contaminants, and conducting studies that contribute to the understanding of climate change. The group convenes a webinar series to hear the latest in hyperspectral research and technology.  

Inland and Coastal Bathymetry  

The USGS Bathymetry Research Coordination Group established this collaboration area to serve as virtual space for people to share and access information about inland/coastal bathymetry activities.  The USGS has many different organizations that create and use bathymetry data, including Coastal and Marine Hazards Research, the Water Mission Area, Ecosystems Mission Area, National Geospatial Program, and National Geospatial Technical Operations Center. This group convenes monthly in a coordination meeting to share methods, data, software, and conceptual models for inland and coastal bathymetry.

Model Catalog

The Model Catalog Working Group was established by the USGS Model Catalog team to get diverse perspectives of what users and potential users expect to see from a USGS Model Catalog. The Model Catalog compiles, organizes, and presents information, publications, software, code, and contacts related to USGS-authored and used models.  The term “model” means different things to different scientific disciplines within the USGS. USGS models range from quantitative physics- and/or thermodynamics-based computer models (such as those that model processes of hydrologic flow or geochemical reactions), to empirical and descriptive models such as grade-tonnage or descriptive models of mineral deposit types. The group provides feedback on catalog development, features, and wording to the Catalog Team. The Catalog team offers presentations and announcements of catalog releases. Members are encouraged to sharing of relevant workflows, external presentations, and opportunities in the associated Microsoft Team.
