Building a roadmap to integrate freshwater wetlands into the National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory
Inter-agency, in-person, collaborative workshop with scientists and
stakeholders to fill a major information gap.
The U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHGI) is compiled annually to meet U.S. obligations to the Paris Agreements. Of the six major land-use types, key challenges exist in comprehensively integrating freshwater wetlands into the GHGI, despite their high capacity to sequester carbon dioxide and their significance in the global methane budget. Standardized national protocols for wetland greenhouse gas accounting are needed to meet climate agreements and plan for climate change. To help fill this major gap quickly and efficiently, we will convene a workshop that brings together a working group of scientists and stakeholders to discuss the latest science, learn from other national inventory experiences, and build a roadmap for comprehensively integrating wetlands into the GHGI. We will leverage USGS expertise, international support, and political momentum, to foster meaningful engagement among a diverse group of government, non-profit, academic, and international institutions to meet a shared objective.
