Developing inter-agency templates for FAIR genetic data archiving

Recent advances in genetic research methods have fueled the use and reuse of genetic data by federal agencies and others. Yet, many types of genetic data currently lack agreement on standard archiving formats. We will provide standardized formats and guidance for common types of genetic data to improve their accessibility and usability even when multiple, seemingly unrelated data sets are downloaded from different government agencies. Today, there are open-data reliant conservation monitoring efforts that attempt to use genetic data collected across large scales that can immediately benefit from better archiving. Importantly, improving usability can aid in timely conservation, monitoring, and resource management efforts, and help meet federal open data goals.
