Is it me or the Water Quality Portal? Providing real-time download reliability metrics to users
A dashboard demonstrating download reliability metrics for water quality data users
The Water Quality Portal (WQP) is a valuable source of public water data, particularly for government agencies, academic institutions, and nonprofits: in fiscal year 2024, more than 54 million queries were made to the WQP spanning over 468 billion rows of water quality data. The USGS and EPA are in the process of updating the WQP database system to a new data format, which sometimes causes temporary interruptions to data availability. These interruptions result in a degraded user experience and confusion on the source of the issue. To keep data downloaders in the know, we will create a status page that (a) indicates WQP performance via standardized “pings” to the database and (b) leverages recent logs of download activity to diagnose issues and understand usage. The dashboard will present simple visualizations and metrics updated frequently to reflect current web service performance.
