Dr. Pete Doucette, Director of the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in South Dakota, will speak at a free public lecture about “New Directions in Land Change Science” on November 17, 2023, at South Dakota State University.

Doucette was chosen to give the Virginia and J. Edward Holtry Distinguished Lecture in Geographic Information Science within the SDSU Department of Geography and Geospatial Sciences. His lecture will include information about how EROS applies deep learning, or artificial intelligence, methods to help efficiently and accurately identify, map and report on landscape types and changes through remote sensing and ground-based data.

These details can be used by people who monitor and manage an array of environments, such as urban areas, forests, cropland and grassland, with concerns that range from water use and drought to wildfire and habitat.

The public is welcome to attend the lecture at 6 p.m. November 17 at McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center in Brookings. Find more information here.
