USGS ALOS PALSAR Data Dictionary
The Data Dictionaries are a set of information describing the contents, format, and structure of elements for EarthExplorer products.
- Field Definition: The date the image was acquired.
Format:
YYYY/MM/DD
- Field Definition: Multi-looking (presume) factor in azimuth (integer).
- Field Definition: Azimuth offset(s) of first image line from first prefiltered data line.
- Field Definition: SLC/MLI/PRI (single-look complex)(multi-look image)(precision image, detected) Image azimuth pixel spacing (m).
- Field Definition: Azimuth Image Resolution (m). The points at which successive pulses are transmitted can be thought of as the elements of a long synthetic array, which a signal processor will then use and process to generate the image. This detailed array of radar signal data is the key to achieving high azimuth resolution.
- Field Definition: Scene Center Latitude/Longitude as estimated/calculated in decimal degrees during scene ingest.
- Field Definition: Polarization/channel to be processed out of the set
Values:
Valid Value:
HH
- Field Definition: Date the data was entered into collection.
Format:
Year, Month, Day
- Field Definition: Date of most recent update to data in a specific record in the collection.
Format:
Year, Month, Day
- Field Definition: The Earth reference ellipsoid semi-major axis (m).
- Field Definition: The Earth reference ellipsoid semi-minor axis (m).
- Field Definition: Number of Echoes to process. The echo signal is correlated with a suitable reference function. This correlation is performed in the frequency domain after suitable Fast Fourrier Transform from the time domain.
- Field Definition: This field uniquely identifies the individual scene.

2007 = Year
10 = Month
16 = Day
709200 = Orbit Number
0510 = Starting frame number
0510 = Ending frame number

- Field Definition: Offset in echoes from the start of SAR signal data file.
- Field Definition: Number of orbit.
- Field Definition: Platform altitude above geoid (m).
- Field Definition: The process of confining the vibrations of the magnetic, or electric field, vector of light or other radiation to one plane. Orientation of the plane of the electric field relative to the Earth's surface.
Values:
HH = Horizontal transmit and Horizonal receive
HV = Horizontal transmit and Vertical receive
VH = Vertical transmit and Horizonal receive
VV = Vertical transmit and Vertical receive
HH - A mode of radar polarization where the microwaves of the electric field are oriented in the horizontal plane for both signal transmission and reception by means of a radar antenna.
HV - A mode of radar polarization where the microwaves of the electric field are oriented in the horizontal plane for signal transmission, and where the vertically polarized electric field of the backscattered energy is received by the radar antenna.
VH - A mode of radar polarization where the microwaves of the electric field are oriented in the vertical plane for signal transmission, and where the horizontally polarised electric field of the backscattered energy is received by the radar antenna.
VV - A mode of radar polarization where the microwaves of the electric field are oriented in the vertical plane for both signal transmission and reception by means of a radar antenna. In this case, the plane of the electric field of the microwave energy is designated by the letter V (vertical) for both transmit and receive events, i.e. VV; this transmit-receive polarity is also called like-polarized as opposed to cross-polarised (horizontal transmit - vertical receive, HV). The amount of radar backscatter received at a particular linear polarization state from a particular ground surface or object depends, in part, on the scattering mechanism and depolarization effects involved.
- Field Definition: Number of range looks per sub-aperture. Radar terminology refers to individual looks as groups of signal samples in a SAR processor that splits the full synthetic aperture into several sub-apertures, each representing an independent look of the identical scene.
- Field Definition: Offset (samples) to first range sample to process,each I/Q pair counts as 1 sample. The fast time within a received pulse, relative to the pulse transmission time
- Field Definition: Time of first record in signal data file (HH MM SS.SSSS).
- Field Definition: Number of raw range samples to process in each echo.
- Field Definition: Name of the site of research interest.
- Field Definition: Total number of raw data echoes in the SAR signal data file.
- Field Definition: Satellite track angle in decimal degrees.
- Field Definition: Track number.
