FORT Science in Action 2026, Part 12: Genetic assessment and simulation inform management considerations for the American bison
Just over a century ago, one of America’s most majestic species — the American bison — was nearly extinct. Thankfully, conservation efforts are helping herds recover from decades of population decline. Now, FORT scientists are studying the genetics of bison herds to help wildlife managers plan and evaluate the potential impacts of herd management actions.
Bison on the brink
Bison were nearly extinct by 1900, but decades of conservation efforts have revived the species to small but stable population levels. Unfortunately, the rapid population decline of the 1800s and historic activities like cattle-bison breeding continue to influence the genetic diversity and resulting health of today’s herds. Where do our bison stand today, genetically? And what does that mean for our management of this precious national symbol?
Driving diversity
In the past year, FORT researchers worked with experts and partner institutions across the United States on two genetic investigations of bison herds. In Montana, they sampled the genetics of a herd of approximately 1000 individuals. Genetic analyses revealed that this herd contained no obvious signs of domestic cattle DNA and that genetic diversity within the herd was high (inbreeding was quite low), providing a baseline for judging the potential impacts of future management actions on herd health.
In Yellowstone, where bison populations are managed by periodically removing some individuals, the scientists simulated how different management tactics might interact with potential catastrophes like disease or drought might impact genetic retention, a proxy for healthy populations. In all, the team showed that maintaining a population of at least 3500 individuals — and limiting population removals to less than 40% of the population at a time — are strong long-term solutions for a genetically healthy herd.
