GIS and Information Management - GGGSC
We support the geospatial component of Mineral Resources Program research and provide public access to research results and geospatial information. We facilitate all aspects of the data life cycle, including the publication and archiving of geospatial information and products. We also develop and steward national-scale data layers considered foundational to the Mineral Resources Program as well as implement geospatial technology to streamline or enhance research workflows.
What Our Project Does
The GIS Project provides GIS support to Mineral Resources Program (MRP) and other USGS projects. The project plays a pivotal role in the development, stewardship, and publication of local to national-scale data layers to meet the Federal mandate to provide geoscientific information to State and Federal agencies, private industry, and the public. GIS encompasses acquisition, compilation, processing, analyzing, modeling, visualizing, documenting, reviewing, publishing, and archiving of geospatial information products. The project conducts research using advanced geospatial technology and analyses to streamline workflows and to create innovative, multi-scale map products to support MRP's role in 21st Century science.
Tasks
GIS Support: provide ad hoc GIS and information management support to Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center (GGGSC) projects and to conduct specialized GIS tasks that are not directly related to other program projects.
GIS Operations: provide and maintain shared GIS, mapping, modeling, digitizing, and scanning resources for GGGSC projects and to supply users with operations support for these common-use systems.
Research and Development: develop and maintain geospatial data supporting MRP research and operational activities. In addition, this task will research and develop GIS methodologies for applying GIS, scientific visualization, data integration, modeling and data dissemination technologies as required. Participation on National Science Foundation project, "Collaborative Research: Brittle-plastic deformation, fluid-rock interaction, and extensional reactivation along Laramide thrust faults in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Colorado," includes legacy data compilation and analysis, as well as Sangre de Cristo spatial data for the Deadman fault zone and associated mineralization.
