USGS Lake Erie East Harbor bottom trawl data series, 1961-2011 USGS Lake Erie East Harbor bottom trawl data series, 1961-2011
The USGS Lake Erie Biological Station's East Harbor sampling program began in 1961 with commissioning of the research vessel Musky II. It is the longest known continuous trawl survey in Lake Erie. In addition to spanning over 50 years, the data series is unique for three prominent design elements: 1) sampling was conducted at three depth strata; 2) replicate trawl samples were collected...

Bee-Gap: Ecology, Life-History, and Distribution of Bee Species in the United States 2017 Bee-Gap: Ecology, Life-History, and Distribution of Bee Species in the United States 2017
Bee-Gap describes the ecology, life-history, and distribution of 3,925 bee species in the United States that have geographical data and verified taxonomy. The database was constructed by compiling information from a broad range of internet sources and peer-reviewed journal articles. The 10 traits included in the database are: native status (native versus exotic/introduced), state and...
Hydrogeochemical mixing data from Lake Michigan tributaries 2011 Hydrogeochemical mixing data from Lake Michigan tributaries 2011
This dataset describes the hydrogeomorphic structure and lake-tributary mixing in three intermediate-sized Lake Michigan rivermouths: Ford River, Manitowoc River, and Pere Marquette River. Data were collected from May to October 2011. Water chemistry variables were measured with a multiparameter sonde along longitudinal, lateral, and vertical transects. Magnesium, boron, and stable water...
Wild lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) diets from annual Lake Huron fall bottom trawl surveys (2008-2017) Wild lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) diets from annual Lake Huron fall bottom trawl surveys (2008-2017)
Diet analyses were performed on juvenile lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) captured by bottom trawl during annual USGS Great Lakes Science Center demersal fish community surveys in mid-October to mid-November 2008?2017 in Lake Huron. This dataset contains lake trout capture information (e.g., location, depth) and diet item data (taxa consumed and their associated lengths).
Microbial communities and bacterial indicators for shoreline sand, sediment, and water in Racine, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; and East Chicago, Indiana; 2016-2017 Microbial communities and bacterial indicators for shoreline sand, sediment, and water in Racine, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; and East Chicago, Indiana; 2016-2017
The data associated with the following data release were collected between 2016 and 2017 at three locations on Lake Michigan: Racine, WI; Chicago, IL; and East Chicago, IN. Individual water samples were collected one day a week for ten weeks between June and August. Samples were collected from eight specific sites made up of two river and six shoreline type environments. Sampling was...
Butterfly community abundance and distribution along a gradient of woody vegetation density at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Hoosier Prairie Nature Preserve, and Tefft Savanna Nature Preserve, Indiana 1998-1999 Butterfly community abundance and distribution along a gradient of woody vegetation density at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Hoosier Prairie Nature Preserve, and Tefft Savanna Nature Preserve, Indiana 1998-1999
The dataset consists of abundance information of butterfly species (61 species) collected at 25 sites in northwest Indiana in 1998 and 1999. Each site was surveyed 21 times. Auxiliary data on environmental conditions were collected to allow us to relate habitat differences among sites to differences in abundance and composition of the butterfly community.
Total phosphorus and water flux at a restored hydrologic connection at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in 2013 and 2014 Total phosphorus and water flux at a restored hydrologic connection at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in 2013 and 2014
This tabular data set contains estimates of total phosphorus concentration and mass, as well as measurements of water discharge and volume at a diked wetland pool (Pool 2B) that was reconnected to a Lake Erie tributary (Crane Creek) via a water control structure in March 2011. Sampling occurred during 2013 and 2014. In addition, this data set contains evaluations of movement of total...
Land cover map including wetlands and invasive Phragmites circa 2017 Land cover map including wetlands and invasive Phragmites circa 2017
The first basin-wide map of large stands of invasive Phragmites australis (common reed) in the coastal zone was created through a collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey and Michigan Tech Research Institute (Bourgeau-Chavez et al 2013). This data set represents a revised version of that map and was created using multi-temporal PALSAR data and Landsat images from 2016-2017. In...
Diet Data from the Western Basin of Lake Erie Examining White and Yellow Perch, 2012-2016 Diet Data from the Western Basin of Lake Erie Examining White and Yellow Perch, 2012-2016
A fish's diet is the integrated response of multiple ecological interactions including habitat use, foraging behavior, prey community characteristics, and inter-specific interactions. Fish diet samples have quantified how the invasion of white perch into Lake Erie in the early 1950s has influenced interactions with native yellow perch, which are similar in morphology and habitat use...
Measured and Modeled Water Velocities in the Detroit River Near Belle Isle from 2014-2017 Measured and Modeled Water Velocities in the Detroit River Near Belle Isle from 2014-2017
This data set contains water depths and velocities measured with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) used to develop a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model was used to inform fish spawning habitat remediation projects in the Detroit River near Belle Isle. Prior to construction of three fish spawning reefs in 2016, ADCP measurements were made...
Using turbidity measurements to estimate phosphorus and sediment flux in a Great Lakes Coastal Marsh, in Ohio Using turbidity measurements to estimate phosphorus and sediment flux in a Great Lakes Coastal Marsh, in Ohio
Great Lakes coastal marshes have the potential to filter water coming off of the landscape and remove sediments and nutrients before they reach the lakes. However, this ability has largely been neutralized as vast areas of coastal wetlands have been isolated behind dikes; while at the same time the Great Lakes continue to suffer from excess phosphorus loading. In this study we used high...
