New Shallow Water Technology Demonstrated by GLSC Ecologist

Alexandra “Sasha” Bozimowski (GLSC, Ann Arbor, Michigan) traveled to the Maumee River, Ohio, to demonstrate the GLSC Smith-Root Light-Duty Electrofishing Catamaran (E-Cat) to US Fish and Wildlife Service (US FWS) Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (FWCO) staff the week of June 20, 2022. The E-Cat is a non-motorized electrofishing raft capable of navigating waters that are too shallow for boat electrofishing but may be too deep or experience excessive flows such that back-pack or tow-barge operations are not possible or safe. As such, Sasha demonstrated the E-Cat’s capabilities in targeting invasive grass carp on the Maumee River where the USFWS Alpena FWCO electrofishing boats have limited or no access. If the effort is successful, it will provide additional information to USFWS staff and managers about grass carp and effective sampling methods in the Maumee River and other similar systems.
