GLSC participates in an annual workshop to exchange information and ideas to improve sea lamprey control.

Personnel from the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) and the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) participated in the Sea Lamprey Annual Workshop on January 31-February 1, 2023, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The workshop was sponsored by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and hosted by UMESC. Jim Luoma (UMESC) chaired the meeting. The workshop brought together Sea Lamprey Control Program personnel from US Fish and Wildlife Service and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Great Lakes Fishery Commission staff, researchers from USGS, and universities from both the US and Canada to participate in discussions, presentations, and breakout sessions to learn and share ideas about improvements and critical issues faced by sea lamprey control in the Great Lakes.

Oral presentations by GLSC personnel:  

  • Chuck Madenjian: Importance of sea lamprey control in restoring lake trout to the Great Lakes (Keynote address) 
  • Tyler Bruning: Installation overview and design for seasonal electric barriers 
  • Nick Johnson (Millersburg, Michigan): 3 years into the Supplemental Control Initiative: Where we were, are, and want to be; Three things we’ve learned about sea lamprey using acoustic telemetry (presentation authored by Chris Holbrook, GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan) 
  • Trisha Searcy: Sea Lamprey Aquaculture and Procurement initiative 
  • Emma Wickert: Sea lamprey procurement and transport 

Oral presentations by UMESC personnel:  

  • Camille Kapita: Developing/establishing cell lines from target and non-target fish species: the case of sea lamprey  
  • Teresa Newton: Acute toxicity of TFM to multiple life history stages of the Round Hickorynut mussel and its host fish  
  • Nick Schloesser: Evaluation of temperature on larval sea lamprey tolerance to TFM 
  • Justin Schueller: Seasonal differences in larval sea lamprey sensitivity to the lampricide TFM
