GLSC Teaches Preschool Students About Aquatic and Terrestrial Science of the Great Lakes
Preschool Outreach Event
On March 31st, 2025, GLSC staff at Lake Michigan Ecological Research Station (LMERS; Chesterton, IN) hosted a group of petite visitors from a local preschool. All 11 students (5 yrs old and younger) and 2 teachers were very excited to tour the LMERS labs, find out what kind of work scientists do, and participate in hands-on activities. Aquatic science team members Kasia Przybyla-Kelly, Maddie Betz, Lauren Fochler, Zach Hatfield and Conor Judge led presentations on aquatic native and invasive species in the Great Lakes Basin, and interactions with example specimens. Terrestrial science team members Bethany Dennis and Noel Pavlovic taught the students about native bees and led an outdoors hike around LMERS to learn about tree identification, how trees grow, and how they are measured. This was a most welcomed outreach event!
