GLSC's Alma Schrage Contributes to National Park Service National Mall Video Using American Sign Language
Making Science More Accessible
GLSC's Alma Schrage, a student services contractor at the Lake Michigan Ecological Research Station (Chesterton, Indiana), contributed to a video produced by the National Park Service National Mall and Memorial Parks using American Sign Language to describe how ducks stay warm in winter in an effort to engage the deaf community. The Mall is in close proximity to several schools for the deaf. Alma filmed the video on the shore of southern Lake Michigan with the city of Chicago in the background. The video was featured on the National Mall website as well as their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Alma's work at GLSC includes undertaking surveys of the rusty patched bumblebee (Bombus affinis) to help best determine site occupancy by the federally endangered species.
