GIS and Dataset Development

The Water Resources Mission Area creates a wide variety of spatial products from GIS datasets, online mappers and decision-support tools, data visualizations, and traditional static maps. Some of the most complex and dynamic mapping in the USGS is directly linked to the talented geographers and spatial analysts that lend their expertise to many national programs.

Spatial analysts at the MD-DE-DC WSC use Geographic Information Systems to interpret data collected through field reconnaissance and downloaded from internal USGS, other federal, state, and local agencies, academic institutions, industry, and other professional contracting organizations. GIS is used to analyze the data using shapefiles and geodatabased information to help prove or disprove hypotheses and enhance deliverables by visualizing the data in the form of thematic or point-referenced interactive web products so they are easily understood, we use our geospatial expertise to create products that are focused on advancing our science and meeting our cooperators’ needs.
