Statistics and information on the mining industry in Jamaica.

Overview

In 2024, Jamaica was the world’s 7th-ranked producer of bauxite, accounting for 1.4% of global production; 9th-ranked producer of alumina, accounting for 1.0%; and 15th-ranked producer of pumice, accounting for 1.4% of global production. Other mineral commodities produced in the country included cement, clay, gypsum, lime, limestone, pozzolan, sand and gravel. The legislative framework for the mineral sector in Jamaica is provided by the Mining Act of 1947, which was amended in 1995. The Mines and Geology Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining is responsible for regulating the mineral sector as well as for issuing licenses and leases for mining operations. Most mineral commodities were produced by joint ventures with the Government. Mining and quarrying exports, which are based largely on bauxite and alumina, contributed about 45% of the country’s total domestic export revenue in 2024.

Data on mineral production are in the Production table (formerly table 1). The Facilities table (formerly table 2) is a list of major mineral industry facilities. More-extensive coverage of Government policies and programs can be found in previous editions of this chapter in the U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Yearbook, volume III, Area Reports—International—Latin America and Canada, which are available at https://www.usgs.gov/centers/national-minerals-information-center/north…;
