Statistics and information on the mining industry in Reunion.

Overview

In 2024, Reunion was not a globally significant producer of mineral commodities. Production of cement, which was the only mineral commodity produced on the island, was predominantly used to meet local construction needs and represented only a small part of the country’s economy. Reunion had several quarries that produced aggregates such as gravel, pozzolana, and sand, but information was inadequate to make reliable estimates of output. Administratively, Reunion is an overseas department of France. The legislative framework for the mineral sector in Reunion is provided by the French Mining Code (Code minier) of 2011, including reforms introduced by Ordinance No. 2022-537 of 2022. The Direction de l’Environnement, de l’Aménagement et du Logement de La Réunion [Department of Environment, Planning, and Housing] oversees the mineral sector and provides regulatory oversight.
