The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in cooperation with the US Geological Survey (USGS) has developed a work plan to investigate the hydrogeologic framework of the Cornell-Dubilier Electronics Superfund Site (CDE) in South Plainfield, New Jersey. The objective is to collect and analyze a suite of borehole geophysics data from selected offsite monitoring wells in conjunction with existing site data, and to provide a stratigraphic evaluation of the shallow ground-water system in relation to site geology.

STUDY OBJECTIVES:
The objective is to collect and analyze a suite of borehole geophysics data from selected offsite monitoring wells in conjunction with existing site data, and to provide a stratigraphic evaluation of the shallow ground-water system in relation to site geology.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in cooperation with the US Geological Survey (USGS) has developed a work plan to investigate the hydrogeologic framework of the Cornell-Dubilier Electronics Superfund Site (CDE) in South Plainfield, New Jersey.
STRATEGY AND APPROACH:
The USGS will conduct the following tasks:
- Geophysically and hydrologically log seven wells that will be drilled during December 2007- February 2008 by the US EPA. Logging includes:
- (a) Gamma, Electric Resistivity, Fluid Conductivity, and Fluid Temperature logs
- (b) Acoustic televiewer logs
- (c) Heat Pulse flow meter under static and pumping conditions logs (note: nearby drilling cannot be occurring during flow meter logging)
- Correlate the gamma, electric resistivity, and acoustic televiewer logs with drillers/geologist logs.
- Based on the results of borehole logging the USGS will provide recommendations for fractures/fracture sets that should be sampled in each of the seven boreholes after they are logged.
- Create 3 to 4 cross sections that are parallel with the bedrock dip direction (roughly NW-SE) and cross the CDE site. (See fig 1 and 2 attached) Each cross section will show the location of wells and the open interval for all nearby monitoring wells, extant monitoring wells will be highlighted. Each cross section will show the site geology as interpreted from geophysical logs, geologist logs, and most up to date geologic information on the Newark Basin.
