Pilot for Long Term Daily Hydrograph Development for the Ecological Flow Goals

To use NJHAT at ungaged sites, an analytical tool is required that can develop a long-term daily hydrograph at these sites. The objectives of the project is to pilot the use of TOPMODEL and DHI software to produce long-term hydrographs at gaged sites and to show that one or both of these models could be used to produce long-term hydrographs at ungaged sites with sufficient accuracy for use with the NJHAT software.

STUDY OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the project is to pilot the use of TOPMODEL and DHI software to produce long-term hydrographs at gaged sites and to show that one or both of these models could be used to produce long-term hydrographs at ungaged sites with sufficient accuracy for use with the NJHAT software.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
To use NJHAT at ungaged sites, an analytical tool is required that can develop a long-term daily hydrograph at these sites. At present there are a number of methodologies and models that could be used for this purpose. The NJDEP would like the N.J. Science Center to pilot two rainfall-runoff models for this purpose.
STRATEGY AND APPROACH:
Since this is a pilot and funding is limited, the approach to be taken will not include what might be considered full calibration and verification of the two models for statewide use. The two models will be calibrated on only five gaged streams (long-term record) to establish general coefficients for different regions of the State. The models than will be used to reproduce long-term hydrographs at up to 10 sites with long-term gage records to test model capabilities. The input data to be assembled for the calibration will be readily available data from the NJDEP databases for land use, water withdrawals, and water discharges. Gage records will be from USGS data. Rainfall, soils, and basin characteristics will come from data developed for other USGS studies including previous TOPMODEL applications and flood frequency studies. No new data will be developed for this pilot.
