Ohio Microbiology Program - NAWQA - Cycle 3
The goal of microbiological monitoring in NAWQA Cycle 3 is to determine the occurrence and distribution of indicators and pathogens in public and domestic groundwater supplies.
LINKS: Back to MIOH Microbiology Homepage
Specific objectives are to:
- Determine if indicators and pathogens are present in groundwater sources identified as being at higher risk to fecal contamination than those wells at lower risk.
- Identify if the presence of indicator bacteria, coliphage, and aerobic endospores can be used to predict the presence of pathogens in groundwater sources.
- Identify well and aquifer characteristics associated with increased risk of pathogen detection.
Guidance for sampling in FY 2017
Please note that all microbiological analyses (bacteria, coliphage, and aerobic endospores) will be done at the OWML. Only a subset of samples will be analyzed for aerobic endospores. Please check with your Principal Aquifer Analyst.
- Equipment and supply list
- Protocol for sampling for indicator bacteria, coliphage, and aerobic endospores
- Analytical Services Request Form (ASR) – send to Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory (OWML) with samples
Notify the OWML by phone or e-mail at least one week in advance of analytical needs
- All lab staff: gs-w-ohclb_owml@usgs.gov
