The breeding bird atlas of Montgomery and Howard Counties, Maryland The breeding bird atlas of Montgomery and Howard Counties, Maryland
A pilot Breeding Bird Atlas was initiated during 1971 in Montgomery County. A second atlas was begun during 1973 in Howard County. The Montgomery project was completed in 1973 and the Howard project in 1975......A total of 138 species were recorded for the two counties (129 confirmed, 7 probable, 2 possible). Status and nesting of the yellow-billed cuckoo in Puerto Rico Status and nesting of the yellow-billed cuckoo in Puerto Rico
Knowledge of the status of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) in the Greater Antilles has been clouded by the bird's elusive behavior and spotty distribution on the islands, and by a major movement of North American migrants through the area to and from their wintering grounds in South America. Although Bond (1956) states that they breed in the Greater Antilles, nests are...

Avian cholera and organochlorine residues in an American oystercatcher Avian cholera and organochlorine residues in an American oystercatcher
Pasteurella multocida, the causative bacterium of avian cholera, was isolated from cultures of the liver and heart blood of a female, adult American oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) found dead on the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, South Carolina, in May 1973. This is apparently the first record of avian cholera in the oystercatcher. Low levels of DDE were identified in tissues...

Organochlorine residues and reproduction in the little brown bat, Laurel, Maryland - June 1976 Organochlorine residues and reproduction in the little brown bat, Laurel, Maryland - June 1976
Twelve of 43 pregnant little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) collected at Montpelier Barn, Laurel, Maryland, gave birth to dead young. Eleven of these 12 dead neonates were abnormally small. Most of the stillbirths were attributable to unknown reproductive difficulties associated with first pregnancies, but four may have been due to high concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in...

Organochlorine residues and eggshell thinning in anhingas and waders Organochlorine residues and eggshell thinning in anhingas and waders
Residues of organochlorine compounds occur commonly in environmental samples and have been associated with adverse effects in numerous avian species (Cooke 1973; L. F. Stickel 1973; W. H. Stickel 1975; Ohlendorf et al. 1977; H. M. Ohlendorf, R. W. Risebrough, and K. Vermeer, unpublished manuscript). The affected species are usually terminal consumers, generally those feeding on aquatic...

Distribution and abundance patterns of the palila on Mauna Kea, Hawaii Distribution and abundance patterns of the palila on Mauna Kea, Hawaii
Censuses of the known geographical range of the rare and endangered Palila were conducted in January (nonbreeding season) and September (breeding season) 1975. The habitat (mamane and naio forest of Mauna Kea, Hawaii) was divided into five major areas, with each analyzed for vegetational composition, phenology of the predominant tree species, and Palila density. Using a line transect...
