PCMSC’s Andy O’Neill Receives CSBPA’s Joe Johnson Outstanding Service Award
This annual award honors coastal scientists, planners, engineers, and innovators who advance the knowledge and understanding of coastal science and coastal processes, with special focus on California and the West Coast.
Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center’s (PCMSC) Andy O’Neill has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the California Shore and Beach Preservation Association’s (CSBPA) Joe Johnson Outstanding Service Award. This annual award honors coastal scientists, planners, engineers, and innovators who advance the knowledge and understanding of coastal science and coastal processes, with special focus on California and the West Coast, and support the activities or objectives of CSBPA.
Andy was recognized for major contributions to coastal science and community engagement, including: work on Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS), now widely used across California as foundational information for coastal-hazard assessments; providing extensive outreach and technical support to communities and partners; supporting CSBPA initiatives such as helping organize a SandSnap campaign to document grain size across California beaches; and coordinating a 2020 webinar series for the California coastal professional community.
The award was presented at the California Coastal Conditions Symposium, an event that brought together scientists, engineers, planners, and policymakers to explore how the state is responding to accelerating coastal change.
