Monitoring and Analysis of Water Resources with Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa
The USGS has partnered with the Fond du Lac Band in monitoring and investigations since 2006 to collect, interpret and publish information needed to manage water levels and restore wetlands for wild rice production. Initial work included a streamgage and a report describing aquifer properties.
New investigations include groundwater and surface-water modelling of the St Louis River Basin.
Approach
•Maintain and operate continuous streamgage on Stoney Brook by making frequent measurements to define range of flow occurring. Field calibrate and verify that instrumentation and equipment are recording and transmitting accurate data.
•Updating surface-water model
•Begin assembling data and building a groundwater model.
Objectives
1.Continuously monitor streamflow using USGS protocols.
2.Make all data publicly available through the National Water Information System (NWIS).
3.Build and calibrate GW-SW model that can be by tribe used for scenarios of land-use changes and water management.
