Survival of Mallard broods in Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge in north central Montana Survival of Mallard broods in Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge in north central Montana

We estimated duckling survival in broods of 31 radio-marked female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) on Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northcentral Montana in 1985 and 1986. Overall survival for the 60-day prefledging period was 0.3951, and 87% of all duckling losses occurred within the first 18 days. Survival through the Class I interval (0.4664) was lower (P 0.05) than...

Effects of experimental overgrowth on survival and change in the turf assemblage of a giant kelp forest Effects of experimental overgrowth on survival and change in the turf assemblage of a giant kelp forest

Crustose coralline algae were the prevalent cover among sessile organisms that paved or grew near the substratum, and also the most commonly overgrown species in a giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C.A. Agardh forest located off San Nicolas Island, California. Giant kelp was the largest and most conspicuous species that overgrew large patches of the substrata; overgrowth among turf...

Growth and equilibrium in sea otter populations Growth and equilibrium in sea otter populations

(1) Counts through time were compiled for five sea otter (Enhydra lutris) populations in the north-east Pacific Ocean that were below equilibrium density: Attu Island, south-east Alaska, British Columbia, Washington State, and central California. Similar data were obtained from the equilibrium density population at Amchitka Island in 1971 and 1986. (2) Shorelines of Attu and Amchitka...
