Population viability of the Snake River chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) Population viability of the Snake River chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)
In the presence of historical data, population viability models of intermediate complexity can be parameterized and utilized to project the consequences of various management actions for endangered species. A general stochastic population dynamics model with density feedback, age structure, and autocorrelated environmental fluctuations was constructed and parameterized for best fit over...

Columbia River Basin white sturgeon Columbia River Basin white sturgeon
White sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus), the largest freshwater fish in North America, live along the west coast from the Aleutian Islands to central California (Scott and Crossman 1973). Genetically similar reproducing populations inhabit three major river basins: Sacramento-San Joaquin, Columbia, and Fraser. The greatest number of white sturgeon are in the Columbia River Basin.

Mutational analyses of molecularly cloned satellite tobacco mosaic virus during serial passage in plants: Evidence for hotspots of genetic change Mutational analyses of molecularly cloned satellite tobacco mosaic virus during serial passage in plants: Evidence for hotspots of genetic change
The high level of genetic diversity and rapid evolution of viral RNA genomes are well documented, but few studies have characterized the rate and nature of ongoing genetic change over time under controlled experimental conditions, especially in plant hosts. The RNA genome of satellite tobacco mosaic virus (STMV) was used as an effective model for such studies because of advantageous...

Neutralization-resistant variants of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus have altered virulence and tissue tropism Neutralization-resistant variants of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus have altered virulence and tissue tropism
Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) is a rhabdovirus that causes an acute disease in salmon and trout. In this study, a correlation between changes in tissue tropism and specific changes in the virus genome appeared to be made by examining four IHNV neutralization-resistant variants (RB-1, RB-2, RB-3, and RB-4) that had been selected with the glycoprotein (G)-specific...

Light-mediated predation by northern squawfish on juvenile Chinook salmon Light-mediated predation by northern squawfish on juvenile Chinook salmon
Northern squawfish Ptychocheilus oregonensis cause significant mortality of juvenile salmon in the lower Columbia River Basin (U.S.A.). The effects of light intensity on this predator-prey interaction were examined with laboratory experiments and modelling studies. In laboratory experiments, the rate of capture of subyearling chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha by northern squawfish...

Are all prey created equal? A review and synthesis of differential predation on prey in substandard condition Are all prey created equal? A review and synthesis of differential predation on prey in substandard condition
Our understanding of predator-prey interactions in fishes has been influenced largely by research assuming that the condition of the participants is normal. However, fish populations today often reside in anthropogenically altered environments and are subjected to many kinds of stressors, which may reduce their ecological performance by adversely affecting their morphology, physiology...

Factors affecting the efficient transformation of Colletotrichum species Factors affecting the efficient transformation of Colletotrichum species
Factors affecting the efficient transformation of Colletotrichum species. Experimental Mycology, 18, 230-246. Twelve isolates representing four species of Colletotrichum were transformed either by enhanced protoplast, restriction enzyme-mediated integration (REMI), or electroporation-mediated protocols. The enhanced protoplast transformation protocol resulted in 100- and 50-fold...
