Geomorphic and ecological effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on coastal Louisiana marsh communities Geomorphic and ecological effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on coastal Louisiana marsh communities

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita made landfall in 2005, subjecting the coastal marsh communities of Louisiana to various degrees of exposure. We collected data after the storms at 30 sites within fresh (12), brackish/intermediate (12), and saline (6) marshes to document the effects of saltwater storm surge and sedimentation on marsh community dynamics. The 30 sites were comprised of 15 pairs...

Two videos of acrobat ants (Crematogaster sp.) preying on applesnail (Pomacea maculate) egg masses Two videos of acrobat ants (Crematogaster sp.) preying on applesnail (Pomacea maculate) egg masses

The videos of ant (Crematogaster sp.) predation on giant applesnail (Pomacea maculata) egg masses were taken on September 24 of 2018 at the Hudson Woods Unit of the Texas Mid-Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex (29 degrees 09'52" N, 95 degrees 30'5" W). Jennifer Wilson (US Fish and Wildlife Service) took the videos using a smart phone.

Burmese python acceleration and location data, Everglades National Park, 2010 - 2012 Burmese python acceleration and location data, Everglades National Park, 2010 - 2012

The dataset contains 3 components: (1) acceleration data logger (ADL) data, (2) GPS location data, and (3) body temperature data. We have ADL data from pythons in captivity (N = 2) and in free-ranging snakes (N=4). We have GPS data for 3 out of 4 free-ranging snakes. We have body temperature data for all 4 free-ranging snakes.

Integrated step selection analysis of turtle tracking data in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, 2008-2019 Integrated step selection analysis of turtle tracking data in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, 2008-2019

This dataset contains all input parameters required to perform integrated step selection analysis (iSSA) to quantify marine turtle habitat selection relative to marine protected areas throughout coastal Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. The iSSA is a flexible approach to compare the environmental attributes of observed steps (the linear segment connecting two consecutive observed positions...

Small mammal captures at the Picayune Strand State Forest, October 2014 - April 2016 Small mammal captures at the Picayune Strand State Forest, October 2014 - April 2016

We used Sherman live traps to capture and mark rodents in the Picayune Strand State Forest between October 2014 and April 2016 (IACUC permit USGS/SESC 2014-12). We selected areas to trap small mammals within the major vegetative types within Picayune Strand State Forest: cypress, pine, hardwood hammock, and wet prairie. We trapped in paired "restored" and "unrestored" areas of each...

Stable isotope dynamics of herbivorous reef fishes and their ectoparasites: 2012, 2013, 2018 Stable isotope dynamics of herbivorous reef fishes and their ectoparasites: 2012, 2013, 2018

Acanthurid surgeonfishes are an abundant and diverse group of herbivorous fishes on coral reefs. While their contribution to trophic linkages and dynamics in coral reef systems has received considerable attention, the role of linkages involving their parasites has not. As both consumers of fish tissue and prey to microcarnivores, external parasites can play a significant role in trophic...

Field and simulated data to construct hypervolumes of coastal wetland plant states for resilience quantification, Louisiana, USA (2016-2017) Field and simulated data to construct hypervolumes of coastal wetland plant states for resilience quantification, Louisiana, USA (2016-2017)

These datasets provide: 1) field-collected biomass and structural attributes for coastal salt marsh in the Port Fourchon area, Louisiana; 2) simulated biomass and structural attributes along flooding gradients using mixed model regression outputs; and 3) resilience metrics calculated using multivariate hypervolumes along with potential environmental covariates of resilience metrics.

Phragmites australis live fractional cover yearly map from 2009 to 2019 of the lower Mississippi River Delta using Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellite data Phragmites australis live fractional cover yearly map from 2009 to 2019 of the lower Mississippi River Delta using Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellite data

Phragmites australis live fractional cover (LFC) maps were created of the lower Mississippi River Delta (MRD) using satellite image data. The historical 2009 to 2016 P. australis marsh LFC maps were based on yearly Landsat image data. The 2016 to 2019 P. australis marsh LFC maps were based on yearly Sentinel-2 image data.

Ecological modeling output for the Combined Operational Plan, Round 1 in the Greater Everglades, 2018-2019 Ecological modeling output for the Combined Operational Plan, Round 1 in the Greater Everglades, 2018-2019

Ecological models facilitate evaluation and assessment of alternative plans for restoring the Greater Everglades ecosystem. Modeling outputs were used in evaluations of alternative water control plans to be performed by the Combined Operational Plan (COP). The models used were: (1) Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow Marl Prairie Indicator in conjunction with (2) Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow Helper...

Data for Estimating detection and occupancy of secretive marsh bird species in low and high saline marshes in southwestern Louisiana using automated recording units Data for Estimating detection and occupancy of secretive marsh bird species in low and high saline marshes in southwestern Louisiana using automated recording units

This dataset compiles all data used in a study on occupancy of secretive marsh birds collected from automated audio recording units in southwest Louisiana. The main data files consist of detection histories for the 11 species across 20 sampling occasions at 33 sites. The sites were randomly selected, and all site level information is provided, including coordinates, marsh type, and...

Short term soil carbon data and accretion rates from four marsh types in Mississippi River Delta collected in 2015 Short term soil carbon data and accretion rates from four marsh types in Mississippi River Delta collected in 2015

Short-term carbon accumulation rates were examined by collecting 10-cm deep soil cores at 24 sites located in marshes spanning the salinity gradient in coastal Louisiana. Percent moisture, bulk density, total carbon content, and the short-term accretion rates obtained with feldspar horizon markers were measured to determine total carbon accumulation and storage rates.

Bayou Dupont Marsh and Ridge Creation (BA-48): 2016 land-water classification Bayou Dupont Marsh and Ridge Creation (BA-48): 2016 land-water classification

The Louisiana State Legislature created the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in order to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The wetland restoration plans developed pursuant to these acts specifically require an evaluation of the effectiveness of each coastal wetlands restoration project in achieving long-term solutions to...
