Rapid peat development beneath maturing mangrove forests: quantifying ecosystem changes along a 25-year chronosequence of created coastal wetlands Rapid peat development beneath maturing mangrove forests: quantifying ecosystem changes along a 25-year chronosequence of created coastal wetlands
Mangrove forests are among the world's most productive and carbon-rich ecosystems. In addition to providing important fish and wildlife habitat and supporting coastal food webs, these coastal wetlands provide many ecosystem goods and services including clean water, stable coastlines, food, recreational opportunities, and stored carbon. Despite a growing understanding of the factors...
Benthic infaunal communities of Baltimore and Norfolk canyons Benthic infaunal communities of Baltimore and Norfolk canyons
Submarine canyons are morphologically complex systems, acting as major conduits of organic matter along continental shelves, promoting gradients in food resources, habitat heterogeneity, and areas of sediment resuspension and deposition. Often environmental conditions within canyons can be highly distinct, particularly in different parts of the canyon and in contrast to adjacent slopes...
Soil surface elevation dynamics in a mangrove-to-marsh ecotone characterized by vegetation shifts Soil surface elevation dynamics in a mangrove-to-marsh ecotone characterized by vegetation shifts
This release consists of soil surface elevation, also called vertical land motion of the wetland (VLMw), and vertical accretion data collected over time across an environmental gradient at Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge near Naples, Florida, USA. VLMw was measured using rod surface elevation tables, while accretion was measured using feldspar marker horizons (i.e., RSET-MH...
Trends in organic matter in baldcypress swamps of the southeastern United States: 2007-2011 Trends in organic matter in baldcypress swamps of the southeastern United States: 2007-2011
A better understanding of the potential of climate change to affect carbon dynamics in wetlands can be gained through the study of plant decomposition and soil organic matter trends across continental gradients. This study from 2007 and 2011 examines patterns of wood, leaf and cloth decomposition, as well as soil organic matter storage in Taxodium distichum (T. distichum) swamps along...
Hydrologic restoration of the Amite River Diversion Canal (PO-0142): 2017 habitat classification Hydrologic restoration of the Amite River Diversion Canal (PO-0142): 2017 habitat classification
The Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority works to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The wetland restoration plans developed specifically require an evaluation of the effectiveness of each coastal wetlands restoration project in achieving long-term solutions to arresting coastal wetlands loss. This data set includes satellite imagery for...
Trojan Y chromosome strategy for eradication of non-native species data Trojan Y chromosome strategy for eradication of non-native species data
The Trojan Y Chromosome (TYC) strategy is a promising eradication method for biological control of non-native species. The strategy works by manipulating the sex ratio of a population through the introduction of supermales that guarantee male offspring.
Locations of mines and mining activity in the contiguous United States 2013 Locations of mines and mining activity in the contiguous United States 2013
This dataset includes locations and associated information about mines and mining activity in the contiguous United States. The database was developed by combining publicly available national datasets of mineral mines, uranium mines, and minor and major coal mine activities. This database was developed in 2013, but temporal range of mine data varied dependent on source. Uranium mine...
Occurrence of live Asian swamp eels in live food markets in USA derived from 2001-2018 surveys Occurrence of live Asian swamp eels in live food markets in USA derived from 2001-2018 surveys
The dataset consists of information on the occurrence of Asian swamp eels in live food markets. The data are from original surveys conducted by Leo G. Nico and colleagues. The surveys were conducted across the USA over the period 2001 to 2018. The dataset includes summary data on the numbers of markets surveyed each year, numbers and names of cities/metropolitan areas where surveys were...
Can biotic resistance explain the small geographic range of non-native croaking gourami Trichopsis vittata (Cuvier, 1831) in Florida, USA? Can biotic resistance explain the small geographic range of non-native croaking gourami Trichopsis vittata (Cuvier, 1831) in Florida, USA?
In this report, we evaluate this hypothesis for croaking gourami Trichopsis vittata, a non-native species that has established a reproducing population, but has not successfully spread beyond its very small (5 km2) range. We suspected the inability of T. vittata to colonize new habitats may be due to biotic resistance by the native eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki.
Plant community establishment in a coastal marsh restored using sediment additions, Barataria Basin, Louisiana Plant community establishment in a coastal marsh restored using sediment additions, Barataria Basin, Louisiana
This data release consists of vegetation cover, soil surface elevation (also called vertical land motion of the wetland (VLMw)), and vertical accretion data collected over 23 months beginning in May 2001 in a restored brackish marsh in southeast Louisiana, USA. Vegetation cover was estimated in permanent plots, and soil cores were collected for determination of bulk density, organic...
Empirical data supporting a non-lethal method for characterizing the reproductive status and larval development of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionida) Empirical data supporting a non-lethal method for characterizing the reproductive status and larval development of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionida)
Here we present the data collected during a mark-recapture study on freshwater mussels in Bruce Creek, Walton County, Florida. These data were used to evaluate the non-lethal impacts of a gill sampling protocol to assess gravidity of freshwater mussels. Data were collected every four weeks, or as weather permitted, to be able to monitor the reproductive status of each mussel every month...
Everglades National Park sediment elevation and marker horizon data release Everglades National Park sediment elevation and marker horizon data release
This data set represents the relevant study site information for the Everglades National Park LTER sediment elevation table - marker horizon study. Nine SETs study sites are located near U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) hydrological stations in Everglades National Park. The coupling of coastal sediment elevation with Hydrology data is important aid in evaluating sea level changes influences...
