Samples Repository Collections Inventory
The collections inventory database for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) Samples Repository is published as a USGS data release (Buczkowski and others, 2018), and is available to search online through the Samples Repository’s inventory search interface. Sample collections in the Repository can be searched and selected through a map interface, or by entering search criteria related to the platform the samples were collected from, the scientist responsible for collection, the field activity, the sample type, the device used to collect the sample, or the date when the samples were collected.
Selected entries can be viewed on individual search results pages linked from the results menu. These results can also be downloaded from the database as comma separated value (CSV) file(s), which are accompanied by metadata.

Database Structure
This collections inventory database consists of individual tables for each sample type identified in the USGS WHCMSC Samples Repository collections management plan (Buczkowski, 2022) and is built in PostgreSQL. The collections inventory database pulls information relevant to sample collection activities from the Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System, or CMGDS, and incorporates it into the inventory search results to provide users with detailed and consistent information.
Updates and Versioning
This inventory represents a catalog of the scientific samples and sample collections curated and preserved by the Samples Repository. Periodic updates to the database are documented on this page as they occur.
