1-D Deep Ventilation (1DDV) model for Crater Lake, Oregon, 1950-2100

December 1, 2023

This data release contains the source code for the 1-D Deep Ventilation (1DDV) model (written in the Matlab programming language), and the input and output data from that model that were used to simulate temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) at specific depths in the lake. The input data consisted of: 1. daily average surface water temperature either a. collected by thermistors (Crawford_and_Collier_2007) between 1992 and 2013 and used for calibration/validation, or b. simulated by air2water from downscaled MACA outputs of air temperature (Abatzoglou_and_Brown_2012) for future simulations following the method in Piccolroaz_et_al_2013; 2. daily average wind speed either a. collected by the National Parks Service (NPS) between 1992 and 2013 and used for calibration/validation, or b. downscaled from MACA outputs of wind speed (Abatzoglou_and_Brown_2012) for future simulations; 3. initial profiles of water temperature, salinity, and DO (Crawford_and_Collier_2007, McManus_et_al_1992); 4. general lake information (including bathymetry, elevation, latitude); 5. Seepage rate for salinity based on approach in Redmond_1990; 6. diffusivity profiles for temperature and salinity based on approach in Wood_et_al_2016; 7. rates of volumetric consumption of oxygen by depth as described in Wood_crater_lake_deep_ventilation; 8. rates of primary production by depth and month following McIntire_et_al_2007; 9. rates of geothermal input (heat and salinity) by depth based on rates calculated in Wood_et_al_2016; and 10. monthly average rates of precipitation and evaporation determined by Collier_and_others_1990 and Redmond_2007. The calibrated 1DDV model for Crater Lake was used to simulate conditions in Crater Lake for 12 general circulation models (GCMs) which were each run over a historical period (1950-2005) and for 2 future climate scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 over 2006-2100).
