Geophysical and video logs of four wells from the Mountain Home area, Idaho
May 12, 2025
In cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected groundwater levels, geophysical logs, and video logs at four newly constructed monitoring wells from the Mountain Home area, Idaho, between November 12 and November 14, 2024. The Mountain Home area is located in the western Snake River plain, 40 miles to the southeast from the state capital in the upstream direction. Geophysical data were collected using Century™ multi-parameter logging probes and select logs as well as the lithologic interpretation are displayed in well log figures. Select geophysical logs include natural gamma, neutron, gamma-gamma density, specific conductance, and temperature. The USGS collected video logs to confirm the construction, integrity, and total depth for each well prior to running geophysical logging tools. Geophysical data shown in well log figures were collected using the natural gamma, temperature, and specific conductance probe (9042A), neutron probe (9057A), and gamma-gamma density probe (0024C). Additional geophysical data are shown for gyroscopic deviation data, included from probe (9095C) and processed using techniques described in Twining, 2016. Geophysical data were collected within cased wells and compared against reports supplied by Idaho Department of Water Resources. Geophysical logs, driller reports, and regional geology were examined synergistically to identify lithologic units, contacts, and suggest water bearing formations. Geophysical data supports construction for the hydrogeologic framework of the area through interpretations of the confining units, fracture zones, porosity, and permeability of the subsurface.
