2019 Year in Summary
In fiscal year 2019 (October 2018-September 2019), the National and Regional CASCs worked alongside close partners and stakeholders to accomplish a multitude of science-based achievements, including evaluating the impacts of ecological drought, providing climate-related trainings, and findings new ways to share their climate-adaptation science with resource managers and users.

Publications
The CASC Network’s science research and findings address the informational needs of natural and cultural resource managers. In 2019, many CASC researchers published on topics around drought, fire, partnerships, and wildlife and habitats.

Drought: In 2019, CASC researchers published several papers exploring the issue of drought, including the impacts of drought on vegetation, the projected frequency of future droughts, drought impacts on forests, and often focused on ecological drought, or periods of water stress that significantly impact species, habitats, ecosystems and the services they provide.

Fire: CASC researchers are studying and trying to better understand the impacts of fire under a changing climate in places like the western U.S.

Partnerships: The CASCs work with partners from federal, state, university and other institutions to collaborate, share knowledge, identify and respond to the science needs of resource managers across the United States.

Wildlife and Habitats: CASC scientists study species and habitats that are experiencing environmental change, from the introduction of invasive species to shifts in species’ life cycle events. Their research also helps identify particularly vulnerable and/or unique environments that may provide insight into what future habitats and species compositions may look like.

Capacity Building
The CASC network supports training opportunities that enable scientists and managers to convene to better understand the impacts of a changing climate on fish and wildlife resources.

Fellows
The CASCs provide early career scientists the opportunity to learn about how a changing climate can impact natural and cultural resources across the U.S. and how science can inform resource management decisions. The CASCs support many early career scientists’ in their research activites and resulting publications.

Tribes and Indigenous Communities
The Bureau of Indian Affairs, the USGS, and tribal organizations collaborated to establish a team of Tribal Resilience Liaisons at the regional CASCs. The Tribal Liaisons facilitate communication, engagement, and research between Indigenous peoples and the CASCs and do so via research projects, training workshops, stakeholder meetings, and other activities.
