Definitions:

UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION: A year of undergraduate education is 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent of college study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent was a prerequisite.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: In the absence of specific graduate program information, a year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours of graduate level college course work, or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full time study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

 

For GS-05:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-05 level:

A 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree, with a major in illustrative design, commercial or fine art, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, appropriate scientific subjects, visual communication or other related fields.

**OR 3 years of general experience, one of which was equivalent to GS-4. Examples of such experience may include work that demonstrated skills in illustrative design, knowledge of physical science, creativity, ability to use tools or equipment associated with scientific illustrations; illustrating, painting, or drawing which demonstrated artistic ability to draw, ink, letter, color, or shade illustrations, charts, maps, diagrams or posters.

**OR A combination of post high school education and experience that when combined together qualify for this position.

 

For GS-07:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:

One full academic year of graduate education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) with major study in illustrative design or other directly related field that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate specialized experience in illustrative design that provided the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. This experience must be equivalent to at least the GS-05 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include preparation of graphic presentations of objects, facts, or ideas requiring the use of art media and artistic ability. This work experience would have involved receiving clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use. Appropriate experience may have been gained working as a commercial artist or illustrator in the fields of public information, advertising, or publishing; or by working with technical or scientific equipment, or entomological, biological, medical, or other similar material.

For GS-09:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

A Master’s degree or completed 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master’s or equivalent graduate degree in illustrative design or directly related field which provided the knowledge, skills and creativity necessary for work as a physical science illustrator.

**OR 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: prepare scientific illustrations in collaboration with subject matter specialists; create scientific illustrations using several types of media; and prepare scientific color illustrations for print reproduction.

**OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience that when combined together qualify for this position.

 

For GS-11:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field which provided the knowledge, skills, and creativity necessary for work as a physical science illustrator.

**OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in illustrative design or directly related field which provided the knowledge, skills and creativity necessary for work as a physical science illustrator.

**OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service. Examples of such experience may include: prepare scientific illustrations working in collaboration with subject matter specialists; create scientific illustrations using several types of media; prepare scientific half tone and full color illustrations for print reproduction.

**OR A combination of post high school education and experience that when combined together qualify for this position.
