Visual Information Specialist, GS-1084
Definitions:
EXPERIENCE: One year of work experience is twelve months working full-time (at least 35-40 hours per week). Part-time experience can be pro-rated (i.e., a year at 20 hours per week is credited as 6 months of experience). If your position consisted of mixed duties, experience credit is given for the percentage of time that you spent on qualifying duties (i.e., if you held a position for 2 years, full-time, consisting of 25% personnel work and 75% budget work, and then applied for a budget position you could calculate your experience as follows: 2 yrs = 24 months. 24 months x 75% [percentage of time spent on budget duties] = 18 months of qualifying experience.)
UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION: A year of undergraduate education is 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent of college study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent was a prerequisite.
GRADUATE EDUCATION: In the absence of specific graduate program information, a year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours of graduate level college course work, or the number of credit hours the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full time study. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
For GS-07:
Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level: *One full academic year of graduate education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) with major study in commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, illustrative design or other directly related field that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate specialized experience in illustrative design that provided the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. This experience must be equivalent to at least the GS-05 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience could include preparation of graphic presentations of objects, facts, or ideas requiring the use of art media and artistic ability. This work experience would have involved receiving clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use. Appropriate experience may have been gained working as a commercial artist or illustrator in the fields of public information, advertising, or publishing; or by working with technical or scientific equipment, or entomological, biological, medical, or other similar material.

For GS-09:
Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field of study which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
**OR One year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-07 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: Apply skill in a variety of visual arts methods, techniques and materials to produce the visual aspects of publications, exhibits, or presentations that have predetermined themes or formats which do not require a subject-matter knowledge. This level of experience would be performed independently with detailed instructions provided for new, difficult, or unusual assignments.
For GS-11:
Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours or 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or LL.M., in a field of study which provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
**OR One year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-09 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: Apply skill in a variety of visual arts methods, techniques and materials to a knowledge of a specialized field or a range of general subjects in order to plan the visual aspects of publications, exhibits, or presentations that have predetermined themes or formats; produce and install graphic elements of museum exhibits; execute fully modeled colored illustrations depicting a variety of general and technical subjects. This level of experience would reflect independence of action within established procedures, and would demonstrate initiative and judgment in coordinating and resolving routine issues that arise.
For GS-12:
One year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-11 in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: Apply skill in a variety of visual arts methods, techniques and materials, as well as knowledge of a subject matter or a program area in order to develop original designs, concepts, or visual styles for publications, exhibits, or presentation materials; transform spoken or written descriptions into visual representations without benefit of existing pictures or models; or graphically or physically reconstruct scientific or technological artifacts, specimens or materials that have been significantly damaged, distorted, or altered. This level of experience would reflect independence in planning and carrying out the assignment, selecting the approach or methodology to be used, resolving most of the conflicts that arise, and coordinating the work with others as necessary.
