USGS scientists are developing a team science curriculum to teach researchers from different fields and backgrounds how to work collaboratively and creatively to address complex environmental challenges.
Addressing the complex challenges that USGS scientists focus on increasingly requires working effectively in cross-disciplinary teams. But the communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills required to successfully do what is often termed “team science” are rarely explicitly taught as part of scientists’ training.
The USGS Team Science Curriculum, once formalized and refined, will be released as a learning resource that can be used “off the shelf” by USGS scientists convening team science projects. When complete, the curriculum will be integrated into the Office of Organizational Development’s course offerings. Funded collaboratively by the Northeast Region, the Rocky Mountain Region, and the Water Mission Area, this project reflects the best of team science principles by bringing together diverse parts of USGS to achieve a common goal.
