The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), has compiled Geographic Information Systems (GIS) datasets to assess the vulnerability of streams and stream crossings to erosion and flooding within Acadia National Park, Maine. Erosion vulnerability of streams is estimated using remotely measured geomorphic and hydrologic variables associated with erosive power, including channel steepness, channel incision, and percent storage in contributing watershed. Flood vulnerability of stream crossings is assessed using existing stream crossing data and watersheds characteristics to compare estimated flood flows to conveyance capacities. The spatial data layers provided in this data release are grouped into three separate child items. The spatial layers provided in the "Lidar-Derived Hydrography Layers for Mount Desert Island, Maine" dataset are hydrography data derived from 1-meter lidar Digital Elevation Models (DEM). They include a hydroline shapefile used to hydro-enforce the lidar DEM (Hydrolines_Acadia_NP); a stream network centerline shapefile derived from the hydro-enforcement that shows stream location (Stream_Network_Acadia_NP); a flow direction raster that predicts the direction of flow (fdr_Acadia_NP); a flow accumulation raster that displays number of upstream cells flowing into each cell (fac_Acadia_NP); and a point shapefile with locations used for headwater initiation of the stream network (Seedpoints_Acadia_NP). The spatial layers provided in the "Erosion Vulnerability Index of Stream Reaches in Acadia National Park, Maine" dataset are a hydrography derived stream network polyline shapefile that contains an erosion vulnerability index (Erosion_Vulnerability_Index_Stream_Network_Acadia_NP), and a watershed delineation point shapefile used to calculate contributing watershed characteristics and estimated flood flows (Watershed_Delineation_Points_Stream_Network_Acadia_NP). The spatial layers provided in "A Database of Stream Crossings including Computed Flood Vulnerabilities in Acadia National Park, Maine" dataset is a point shapefile that contains the estimated flood flows, conveyance capacity, and computed flood risk of each mapped stream crossing (Stream_Crossings_Acadia_NP).
