At the request of the State of Washington, the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Western Fisheries Research Center has been providing technical advice and conducting research regarding the emergence of IHNV in the watersheds of coastal Washington State.
Research on emerging viruses of salmonids where the further spread of a new strain of Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) constitutes a significant risk to both hatchery and wild stocks of steelhead that support economically important treaty and non-treaty fisheries and that are critical elements in recovery planning for ESA listed stocks. At the request of the State of Washington, the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Western Fisheries Research Center has been providing technical advice and conducting research regarding the emergence of IHNV in the watersheds of coastal Washington State. The virus is causing high mortality among young steelhead trout reared at State and at Tribal facilities and is special concern to the Quinault and Tulalip Tribal fisheries programs. Support for further research from the NWIFC resulted in funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs as well as from the USFWS.
