Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
The USGS M3 in collaboration with the Web Informatics and Mapping Group have developed a custom Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) named MERLIN. The M3 runs over 10,000 individual analyses a year and MERLIN is critical in tracking sample collection, analysis, and report outs for cooperators. MERLIN has been highlighted as an example LIMS by the Laboratory Advisory Board (LAB!).
Merlin is designed with a three-tier architecture comprising a PostgreSQL database, a Python-based web services API built on the Django REST Framework, and a JavaScript-based web application built on the Vue.js framework. Each tier is modular and can be modified or replaced independently, ensuring flexibility and ease of maintenance across the system.
