An earthlodge structure built along the Knife River

Detailed Description

A replica of the earthlodges built along the Knife and Missouri Rivers by the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara people. The circular structures were built using timber from cottonwood trees and were covered in sod, dried prairie grass and willow branches. Should climate change result in hotter and drier conditions, cottonwood trees and prairie grasses could be threatened.
